This evening we head to the magnificent Glasgow Necropolis with all its stunning monuments and mausoleums dating back to 1832. In the same area are the equally magnificent Glasgow Cathedral, the Cathedral Precinct, the Glasgow Royal Hospital buildings and the now renovated Provands Lordship building.
Heading a little bit further towards the city centre, there are also the two famous murals by Smug – St Kentigern and St Enoch, as well as a host of modern architecture on the Strathclyde University and the City of Glasgow College campuses.
Start Time and Place:
Because of the incredible amount of photo opportunities that this evening offers up, we will start at 7.15 pm. (This allows anyone arriving on 7pm train to get there)
Meet point is outside the Museum of Religious Life & Art at 7.15pm. As the main vehicle gates will be locked, we will be entering the Necropolis from the side entrance on John Knox Street opposite Cathedral Square. There are two further pedestrian entrances on Wishart Street.
Getting There/Parking:
There is usually on-street parking on Wishart Street which should be free after 6pm. There are also a number of Cathedral Precinct car parks in and around Castle Street – Google maps is your friend here.
Central Station is about a 15-20 minute walk and Buchanan Street bus station is about a 10minute walk.
Themes and Health & Safety:
The themes for the evening (remember, they’re just a suggestion) are:
Street art
Monuments
Old and new buildings
In the Necropolis just to be on the safe side, I’d recommend that people go around in groups rather than on your own, especially if you’re planning to stay a bit later to catch the sun setting over the city. I will also be notifying the Park Rangers that some folk with cameras will be on the site.
If you’re planning on coming to this walk and are not already on the club’s WhatsApp group, I’d suggest you join it so we can all keep in contact throughout the evening.
Comments
Will it be open?
It appears to be open 7am-4:30pm from what appears on-line.

I have now checked with my Park Ranger friends and it is only the vehicle entrances that are shut - for obvious reasons. The three single gates (from Cathedral Precinct, from Ladywell and from opposite the Hotel) remain open. I will be leading this one and I will post details of where our meeting point is nearer the time.
Thnx for the clarity Fiona. I suppose you can get a bike in?
Last time I used one of the gates there was no barrier to keep bikes out. But I'm heading up at the weekend so I'll check again.
