The images presented here were taken by two members of Irvine Camera Club, Joanne Redford and Marsha Wilson and were entered into our recent panel competition. This is an annual event that encourages members to plan 5 images that together, create a body of work.
With Spring slowly approaching, I am starting to plan my outdoor photography projects, but these creative, abstract and colourful images remind me that there are still things I can work on indoors as well. Both photographers have been attracted by colour and form as a theme. They then aimed to create abstract images that require a careful look, again with the aim of the collection of images being more important than any one image.
Marsha’s images were created using marbles and a small light source to bring out the colours. This is not as easy as you might first think as you need to focus beyond the surface of the marble onto the colour patterns inside them, that is once you have found the patterns that appeal to you. When putting the images together in a panel, careful consideration had to be taken to present them in a certain order and to make sure that the colours don’t clash and enhance each other.
Joanne’s images were created using oil and water to create bubble patterns that were lit using a light source and then photographed from above. These images, although abstract, are very much about how the photographer observes the patterns, which ones appeal to them and finding complimentary shapes and colours. There is a certain amount of randomness to the patterns created that are slowly brought to order through selection, editing and presentation.
