The images presented here were taken by two members of Irvine Camera Club, Stephen Kerr and Grant Scholes and entered into our recent panel competition. This is a very special annual event that encourages members to plan 5 images that amount to more than perhaps each individual image would on its own.
Both photographers chose bridges as a subject and theme but with very different approaches. Stephen chose to capture the bridges across the Clyde in Glasgow and to highlight the nicknames that they have, shooting at night to capture to colours and ambience of the scene.
Grant took a different approach, shooting in black and white to highlight the shapes and textures of the structure of one bridge rather than many. Through his images he manages to tell a story about the bridge, what it looks like, what it does, how it gets used and when it was built.
This would be very difficult to do in one image and is where the panel competition allows photographers to explore a subject in more detail. Even in 5 images this is still difficult to do but it forces you to be focussed and ruthless when trying to narrow your selection down to so few images. It’s a great learning exercise that you can then take to other areas of your work.
If you have an interest in photography, would like to see what we are up to and want to be part of an exciting, all-inclusive club then why not come along, you will be made to feel very welcome.
We meet on Tuesdays, starting at 7.30 at Irvine Community Sports Club, Waterside, Marress Roundabout, Irvine KA12 8DL
