In the Herald - We focused on the Forth Valley

Irvine Camera Club kicked off our new season with a weekend road trip to the Forth Valley.  Ten of our intrepid club members made their way across to the Falkirk Wheel on a rather gloomy Saturday morning for a 10:30 rendezvous.  Although it was cloudy there were only a few fleeting light showers.  In between the showers the light did make an appearance and provided some much needed contrast for us to make images of this amazing feat of engineering.

We spent several hours exploring the location, taking photos looking down from the top as well as in and around the visitors’ centre.  It’s one of those places where the longer you spend looking, the more opportunities present themselves to make interesting compositions.

After a bite to eat for lunch we moved down the road to the iconic Kelpies.  These enormous metallic statues really have to be seen to be believed.  Once again, our members tried to take in every angle available and to use every trick in the photographic book to produce compelling images.  The moody sky helped by providing a suitably atmospheric backdrop for the imposing rearing heads.  It was my first time at the Kelpies and if you haven’t already been I would definitely recommend it.

Finally, it was time to head to down to South Queensferry to get some photos of the three bridges.  By this time the little light we had enjoyed earlier was beginning to fade and our hopes of a glowing sunset had faded with it.  Being a photographer is all about making the most of what the environment gives to you, and once again we set about using the location to the best of our best ability.   Some took the sweeping vistas and others looked for details in architecture as well as recording the pretty rows of houses and shops in the town itself.

I hope you enjoy the photographs we managed to get of the three locations.  It was an excellent road trip to get the new season started and it’s certainly going to be a trip we try again sometime soon.  If you would like to come along to Irvine Camera Club, we meet every Wednesday evening at 7pm.  You can find all the details on our website www.irvinecc.co.uk.
