With this year’s season well and truly underway, we have just had our first image competition of the year. As expected, the standard was incredibly high and with the critical eye of Keith Walker looking over them, there was plenty to evaluate and discuss.
As you can see from the images here that were all submitted into the competition, there was a wide variety of subjects, techniques and styles on display. That’s one of the great things about open competitions, you never know what to expect and I can only imagine how hard they are to judge, let alone put in some kind of winning order.
At the club we have a number of creative photographers who are always trying to develop their technique further and are willing to learn and try new things. Sometimes in club competitions it can be easy to play it safe, but our members never do, willing to challenge and experiment, push their boundaries to see what they can create and then present it to see what others think about it.
Through its competitions and small group meet ups, our club nurtures a safe space for photographers to try things, with mistakes and failings very much looked upon as part of the learning journey. Not something to shy away from, but to learn from moving forward. All comments are encouraged to be critical but encouraging and often we are asked to justify the comments we make so that the opinions we give are thought through before we deliver them.
This is important and along with all the community support work and help we give people through our photography, it forms the core ethos of the club, a welcoming space for all not matter what level they are at or what they use to create photographic images.
If you would like to know more about Irvine Camera Club, photography or if any of these images have inspired you pick up a camera, we have a packed schedule of weekly events including talks, walks, practical nights, community exhibitions, competitions and so much more going on this year.
