In this series of articles, we will be showcasing the work of several of our members. This week we focus on Marsha Wilson.
Like many newcomers to photography, Marsha’s interest was piqued through taking photos on her mobile phone. This emerging talent really took off after a kind club member gave her a Canon DSLR.
A subsequent Christmas gift of a Lumix G6 is now her camera of choice. Says Marsha “I enjoy using this camera, mostly because it is compact and lightweight, and it renders colour beautifully.”
Marsha’s style leans to the quirky and colourful. Of late she is busy developing more creative aspects of photography. She loves looking closely at her surroundings and trying to find details and abstracts to photograph.
The nurse continues: “I enjoy making collages and montages of my images. I also quickly got hooked on intentional camera movement (ICM) and I love the abstract and unpredictable nature of this type of photography.”
For Marsha photography is very much a hobby and she still considers herself a beginner with lots to learn. She adds: “I do feel I have come a long way in recent years, and the impetus to continue is the sheer fun and joy in taking photos. I would like to keep improving the type of photos I take. I’d like to try macro photography, but I also really must master the editing processes to make the best of my images.”
Marsha’s success in her photography was evidenced when she achieved the ‘Best Beginner’ award last year at the club with a string of images that showed significant skills.
While obviously pleased with her progress, Marsha remains modest about it and is always willing to have a laugh at her own expense. She recalls two occasions when her love of photographing Anthony Gormley sculptures has ended in chaos. On one occasion an 8 hour round trip with her partner to Gormley’s ‘GRIP’ at Saddell Bay ended with her car sinking deep into shale. Fortunately, a handful of forestry workers eased the rising panic by liberating the car. Less fortunately, by the time they got the car free it was time to come home. A visit to his ‘Another Place’ at Crosby Beach, resulted in a broken shoulder after a fall at her accommodation.
Laughs Marsha: “Once again, we were homeward bound.” She adds: “ However, and without mishap, I can thankfully report that I do have a snap of the ‘Angel of the North’”.
