This week Irvine camera Club present a selection of landscape images that were submitted as part of a digital image competition at the end of last year. For me personally landscape photography is one of the genres that I enjoy the most. If one of the aims of photography is to show the viewer something they haven’t seen before, then this discipline is one that keeps giving. It can educate, tell a story, encourage travel, it can transport the viewer to far off distant places, whether that’s somewhere familiar or somewhere new.
Landscape photography is no different from other genres in that it requires study and planning, often involving many visits to the same location to get the shot you are after. Light can be unpredictable, and I’ve seen views change in a matter of minutes from a flat, uninspiring scene to something dramatic and full of depth and contrast.
We are lucky in Ayrshire that we do not have to travel far in any direction to find amazing scenery, One of the challenges is to try and show a familiar scene in an unfamiliar way. That is what keeps attracting photographers back to the same places year after year with no two visits ever looking the same. In photographing the same location over time, it also possible to create a social and/or environmental record of the changes to an area which creates an important document of our times.
I would encourage you all to head out during the next few months, especially in less favourable weather with your cameras and see what you can find.
If you have an interest in photography, would like to see what we are up to and want to be part of an exciting, all-inclusive club then why not come along, you will be made to feel very welcome.
We meet on Tuesdays, starting at 7.30 at Irvine Community Sports Club, Waterside, Marress Roundabout, Irvine KA12 8DL
