Photography was something I had been interested in learning for a few years, but like most people I had a busy life and I never seemed to get around to it.

I moved from East Kilbride to Saltcoats a couple of years ago, and then to Irvine within the last 12 months.

Inspired by some of the scenery of the Ayrshire coastline, it was at this time I decided to begin to learn about photography.  I started off by doing a free online photography course.  This helped me get my camera out of the automatic settings and to begin to develop my skills.

As my photography started to improve, I began to explore the local area more and all the stunning locations and views that Ayrshire offers to an aspiring amateur photographer.  I spent time exploring everywhere from Saltcoats to Ardrossan, West Kilbride, Portencross, Largs, Wemyss Bay and of course Irvine beach, trying to take better images and hone my skills.

In September 2021 I decided to join Irvine Camera Club after seeing a post on Facebook, encouraging new members to come along.

From the first evening the committee and club members couldn’t have been more welcoming and it has been really enjoyable to spend time with people who share the same interests.  It is helping me improve my photography skills week by week with the weekly challenges, regular club competitions, guest speakers and all the club members being only too happy to offer advice and assistance with any questions I have on various photography topics.

The social aspect of it has also been really important for me, especially during these difficult times with Covid, which has meant I have been almost constantly working from home for 2 years - which can be isolating.

I am now looking forward to 2022, when (Covid permitting) we can get out and take part in some photo-walks in the area and further afield.

I would encourage anyone with an interest in photography to come along to the club and try it for yourself.  You can find all the details at our club website, www.irvinecc.co.uk
