We recently had our first print competition of the season judged by Dave Ferguson who visited us to deliver his results.  Personally, I feel images always look better in print and those presented here were the top images of the night, with the overall winner David Bell presenting his image of Giudecca Island Veneto.  Dave really had his work cut out with so many incredible images to look through and more than one that could easily have taken the top spot. It was a great evening generating much discussion amongst those that were there.

I would encourage every photographer to see their work in print.  There are so many different papers and techniques available now, it adds something very special to the overall feel of an image.  Looking at the digital versions as I am putting this article together, they do not have the same impact as the printed versions did on the evening.  The clarity of David’s winning image was incredible, you felt like you could look right inside the buildings.

It was also interesting to see the different sizes of print that members chose to present their work in.  This is something to consider especially if you have a special image that maybe is not as sharp as it could be, then printing smaller can help the clarity.  At the other end, with large prints, you have to be very careful that every small blemish or mark is taken out as everything becomes noticeable.

One of our members Marsha, came with a ‘salt-printed’ image of a dahlia which is the first time I had seen an image printed using this very old technique, but again it shows the interests that our members have and I for one was inspired to go and read up about it and learn something new.

If you have an interest in photography, would like to see what we are up to and want to be part of an exciting, all-inclusive club then why not come along, you will be made to feel very welcome.  There’s always tea, coffee and biscuits and if you’re lucky Fiona may have been baking.

We meet on Tuesdays, starting at 7.30 at Irvine Community Sports Club, Waterside, Marress Roundabout, Irvine KA12 8DL
