A short follow-up on Colour Space in Lightroom.

  • Lightroom uses a colour space called ProPhotoRGB which you can't change.   (remember Lightroom doesnt alter the file it just keeps the list of edits you apply).
  • Your raw files can be converted to any profile you would like - the colour space setting in your camera only applies to the JPGs that the camera makes.
  • The important thing is to choose the colour space when you export a JPG or edit in another program.
  • For online and computer screen, tablets, phones etc - sRGB is the best profile to use.  These devices are incapable of displaying wider profiles.  If you export to AdobeRGB then your colours will look flat and lifeless on most devices.
  • If you are printing on a high end printer then you may wish to export to AdobeRGB and print from Photoshop.  I have to say in my experience it doesnt make a noticeable difference.  Most commercial labs (including Loxley) request your images in sRGB.
